You can't miss the Mekong when you come to Savannakhet: it is the cardinal point of the town which is built along the river.

The flow here is peaceful although powerful and is largely responsible for the calm and relaxing atmosphere that reigns in the village.
The recently renovated riverside promenade, facing Thailand, is a popular spot for locals in the late afternoon.
Don't forget to sit on one of the many terraces and viewpoints to observe the activity on the river and contemplate this enchanting picture with its changing lights.

Buddhism is everywhere in Savannakhet, as in the rest of the country. Religious festivals punctuate local life. Even urban planning is a consequence of Buddhism since the villages are organized in a row around Buddhist temples.
Buddhism

That Ing Hang, one of the country's most important sacred sites, registered as national heritage, is about 12 kilometers from the city, and Vat Xaiyaphoume, the city's oldest, is well worth a visit, whether you're a Buddhist or not.
On foot or by bike, you can go from one to the other located in town to listen to the chanting of the monks, and with discretion, observe the practices of the villagers.
